This Ol' Blog Gets A New Owner

I started this blog just over five years ago. Its purpose was to explore, share, and discuss the music of Charles Manson. In the process I spread a lot of music, got a lot of music I never knew existed, and made some friends. In the last couple of years though, I have had less and less time and energy to devote to keeping this blog as active as I would have liked to. Rather than delete it or let it continue to sit stagnant and lose followers I have decided to pass it on to someone whom I trust can breathe new life into it and keep it active. That someone is Mike McCloskey. You all probably know him already as a leading figure in the online ATWA community and I can't wait to see what he has in store for us in the future here. And without further adieu I will bid you farewell brothers and sisters. Take it away Mike!

At Long Last...It's Update Time!

Well, it's certainly been a while since I've posted something new here and today I have several new items to talk about. First on the list is two NEW records by Manson! The first is a full-length album called "Air". I've not heard it yet but there is a sample available over at Order Of ATWA's blog. It's a spoken word piece but I am assuming that there is also music on the actual album. Also, Holy Terror records has put out a 7" called "Inner Sanctum" that contains three tracks (the first of which is the title track of the full-length lp) for $7.77. Like I said, I haven't heard either of these releases yet but I presume they include new music as well as the spoken word since I've been informed by a friend close to Manson that he has access to his guitar again and is even giving lessons to fellow inmates. Another item of interest I recently ran across on the web is an art exhibition called "Man Son 1969". It is actually over now but, of course, it may tour to other museums. Either way the website is still up and it's worth a look. The exhibit was held in Hamburg, Germany so the site is in German but among the many artists on the roster were Joe Coleman and Kenneth Anger. Here's a blurb from e-flux.com:

"The exhibition MAN SON 1969. The Horror of the Situation explores the lure and danger of extremes. It takes as its starting point a series of historical events in aesthetics and politics, lifestyle and counterculture that took place in the late 1960s. 35 international contemporary artists look back at the events of 1969 in the United States and Europe, and contribute works that deal with the far-reaching social transformations of that era. These contemporary positions will be juxtaposed with selected works from the museum's collections.
In 1969, the music festivals of Woodstock and Altamont were staged, one celebrating the spirit of love, the other ending in the violent death of a music lover. It was also the year in which man first landed on the moon and public opinion in America and Europe shifted against the war in Vietnam. Sharon Tate and six others were brutally murdered in Bel Air/Los Angeles. And finally, another item that was passed on to me by a friend. This one should tide you over until you get your hands on the new releases from Manson. This groovy little cassette release was called "ATWAR" and includes some stuff I'd not heard before. Four musical pieces and one spoken word piece. The description that follows is from the original uploader:

The Wit and Wisdom of Charles Manson (2-disc set)

This double disc set was passed on to me from JeremiahMacK5514. It's basically a compilation of interview segments over the years. I briefly scanned through it just now and heard a little bit from the Tom Snyder interview and a few others that were immediately recognizable. There also seems to be a couple of tracks of music sprinkled into the mix. Some strange club beats with samples of Manson's words and a couple of prison tracks that did not immediately ring a bell. Pretty much a random mix of wit and wisdom, as the title says, but it could serve as an introduction for those who aren't too familiar with Charles Manson. Much of this material seems to deal with the trial and such. For a better introduction to ATWA and his thoughts on subjects other than prison and the Family I would go for the double disc "Manson Speaks" compilation which can also be found here in the archives. Thanks to Jeremiah for the link and for giving us something new to post here.

Well I dug this up from a torrent on Pirate Bay, made by Yamashita Riki. It included a compilation which I'd never heard of before, and it was actually put together (artwork and all) by him. The following is directly from the artwork:

Thirteen songs were selected to represent the "Very Best of" the music of Charles Manson, as an easy introduction to first time listeners. A Couple Of Things

Been a little short on Manson material here as of late. Many of our regular visitors have probably noticed it's been quiet but that's because of a lack of new stuff to share with you. If you haven't been here much, look through the archives and you'll find nearly every single recording out there. We've got the major albums plus singles, alternate versions, Family Jams, and other related albums. Not to mention interviews and the like. I'm sure we'll come across something new for you soon.
In the meantime, I can't help but direct you to Digital Meltd0wn where I've released my new effort. Subduction is an experimental music project I've been working on with my friend and collaborator, Ian Briscoe. This had nothing to do with Manson but I think at least some of you will dig it. The album is called "Bad News From The Inner Solar System" and explores several different avenues of musical endeavor. The sound was created using a mixture of vintage synths, homemade syths, theremin, stylophone, tape loops, samples, and more. Interesting Google Feature

We've fallen on a bit of a silent period here at Manson Music since the holidays but we are still here. It's just that the business of the season, coupled with that fact that we've compiled a pretty comprehensive blog here so far, leaves us with little to post at the moment. Still, leave it to Google to provide us with yet another interesting way to search the net, thus enabling me to pass this on to those of you who haven't seen it yet. Google has added a new "timeline" feature that allows you to search and view the results chronologically, so to speak. You can actually search just about anything with a history, from countries like England to institutions like the Federal Reserve, but I think it might work best with people. Try Charles Manson with it and you'll see what I mean. You get a nice little graph at the top of your results that is divided by decade. Within each of these decades you also get mini bar graphs indicating how much information you can expect to find during each time period. Clicking on each decade you can continue to refine your results by the individual years and even months. It's actually a very cool new way to search and I can already think of many ways to use it. The syntax is simple. Just try it out by pasting this into the search bar:

Well this is the 09/11/67 sessions which have been recently packaged in numerous ways, and while "The Psychedelic Soul Of Charles Manson" is what I believe to be the whole entire session, in the correct order. The incredibly poor sound quality of that disc ruins it (for me at least). That's why if I want to hear this material I always reach for this disc instead.

Put out in 2007 in Germany by the Arte Lupo label, I can't say I really care for the title of it, but the quality of the disc itself makes up for that. It's about as close as we can get at this time to the entire 09/11/67 sessions released with a good quality sound mix.

LIE: The Love and Terror Cult

I know Will's against posting duplicates on this blog, but I figured I'd make an exception for this album. See this originally came out in 1970 in a limited run of 2,000 copies on a made up label called Awareness Records as "LIE: The Love and Terror Cult" (2144).

Producer Phil Kaufman later peddled the recordings around to other labels in hopes of getting a wider circulation, and eventually made an agreement with ESP-Disk who put out the album again in 1974 as "Charles Manson Sings" (ESP-2003).

As time went on more and more pressings of this started to appear, such as an Argentinian bootleg, a French issue with a different sleeve, and in 1987 the junk UK label stealing the label name of the original release, put out the most readily available reissue of the album on both cheap LP & CD.

And gradually as time went by and these tapes were pressed, repressed and bootlegged to high heaven, the quality started to deteriorate considerably.

That is why I'm choosing to post my rip of the original 1970 album, no mastering, no quality loss, nothing. Just as it was meant to sound when it was released. This pressings thick vinyl has kept the sound as pristine as it can, and I've ripped it first to wav, then converted it to high quality 256kbps mp3.

This record contains 55 minutes of live-music, recorded at Vacaville in the early 80's.

Limited edition of 555 copies.

This is a much better quality vinyl rip than the one I did before, so if you have the other one, it is worth replacing it with this.

The music itself is an unedited version of the "Live At San Quentin" tape, so although you'll think "I've heard this before" well yes, but you've only heard selections from this tape. On this album you'll find many sections that were edited out of the other release, and when you look back on things this was the original release from 1989, long before Grey Matter got their hands on it in 1993 and cut it all up.

Since the record sounds like it's cut a little too slow I altered the pitch (through my turntable not computer) and now it sounds like it's playing at the right speed & pitch, so Charles voice doesn't sound too low and murky.

Also on my previous rip near the end of the B-Side, noise overtook the recording, at first I thought my stylus had worn completley out, but it actually turned out to be static built up in my stereo cable linking to my computer. Once I replugged it everything was fine, so I now have a full 55min rip with no static available here for you guys.

Never Learn Not To Love

Well this will be my first post on here, as some may not know Psyche has graciously invited me to join as an author for the blog, which I am honored to do.

What I have uploaded here is a compilation I've been working on for a little while now entitled "Never Learn Not To Love". It is a collection of recordings by artists; all of whom cover a song written by Charles Manson. So no Charlie himself isn't found on these recordings, but his words are.

It took me a good amount of research and searching to track down these 8 tracks but I think it's a cool idea, and it'll be nice for fans to hear other artists' takes' on these songs. Artist features on this compilation include everything from The Lemonheads to The Beach Boys, so it really contains a variety of music styles.

Thanks to bob who helped me remember to add "Arkansas Revisited", it's in there now...hopefully I didn't forget any other obvious ones.

The artwork was also designed by me, and it's really just something I threw together in a few minutes, nothing real special but it gets the job done.

New Vids And More!

A while back when we had a promo making spree here I got some really cool submissions and they keep coming! These are two that I recently received from Gobacktogo and L_N_K. They are even better than the ones from the contest so I'll use them as needed. They also seem to be getting some hits on Youtube. The above pic is a scan I took of one of Manson's original business cards that was sent to me by George and Sandra before the original ATWA site went down back in 2000 or so. By the way, I'm not familiar with a "Summer of Hate" release from sessions in '67 but it sounds like it could be the "Psychedelic Soul" stuff under a different name. You can look through the blog archives and the links should still be up for that one. If there is some unique material included on that release I would be glad to post it here. As far as "Death Dealers" goes, it's interesting but I don't ever reference murder here and I don't want to include things that glorify that aspect of Manson's history. It's all about the music and words of Charlie, himself, here and I don't think he'd dig being included on something called "Death Dealers". I do appreciate the link, though, Daniel and check your email. I sent you something. Anyway, enjoy the vids everyone!

This is the single for "I'm On Fire" with a flipside of "Hallways Of The Always". These tracks are cut from the "Live At San Quentin" and "Commemoration" releases and could serve as a decent introduction to Manson's prison music. One should keep in mind, though, if not familiar with his work that the prison stuff is quite different than the early recordings like "Psychedelic Soul" or "Lie". He is 74 today and I would imagine that getting thrown in the hole for any minor infraction of rules is taking its toll. Still, by all accounts he is a survivor and we wish him well.

Some Spoken Word & A Request

Spotlight gave me this link to share with you all. It's a compilation of spoken word material and phone conversations from Manson on a wide variety of subjects. Included in the download is 11 phone conversation tracks, some of which you can find elsewhere here, but the best part is the first track that's tagged as "Anthology". This one is over 80 minutes long and is a sort of oral history of Manson's life in his own words, compiled from various interviews and such. Apparently this was put together by Keith Christopher Kosiewicz. In addition to following a pretty coherent chronology, it also kind groups his quotes by subject in much the same way as "Superstar" does as a documentary. Thanks for the share Spotlight!

At long last, Gobacktogo has provided me (and you) with this classic underground spoken word compilation. And I must say that this vinyl rip sounds crystal clear! "Fear Power God" was put out by a magazine called "Birth of Tragedy" sometime in the late 80's, if I remember correctly. Although I never saw their magazine, I'm glad they gave us this compilation that's tracklist reads like a roster of some of the most extreme and revolutionary free-thinkers of the 20th century. This was probably the first spoken word record that really got my attention as a teenager. A little bit of everything here and a true uncensored introduction to outsiders and rebels like Lydia Lunch, Allen Ginsberg, Anton La Vey, and Jello Biafra. I'm including it here, of course, because Charles Manson is among the stellar list of contributors. Mostly, though, I'm including it because I honestly think everyone should hear it. Especially if there is even one person represented on the album that you have never heard of. Long live freedom of speech! At least until they find a way to silence us on the internet.

Thanks again Daniel, I guess this just about completes my wish-list here. Of course, any new contributions of Manson material not represented here are always welcome.

Ok, I guess I should go ahead and make a decision here. I think I'm going to go with the video submitted by Styxhexenhammer3, although I actually liked them all. I'll probably end up using each of them at some point or other so please don't delete them from your Youtube vids, guys. Ok?

Also, in the comments of the last post (one with the vids) a visitor called Solomonopoly is looking for a song. I can't place it off hand but if any of you can help, please post an answer for this visitor. He (or she) has listed the lyrics but they didn't actually say it was a Charlie song. I didn't recognize it, myself. It's called "Man's Son".

Manson Music Needs Your Skills!

After finding some videos on YouTube that people had put together using Manson songs (some of which even included the url for this blog at the end of them) I got an idea. I'm sure there are some visitors here who have video editing skills. I would love to see what you can do given a challenge, or at least an idea for motivation. So, I thought I'd ask if there is anyone who would like to put together a sort of video advert for the blog. The only rules are:

1.) use a song by Charlie
2.) include the url and name of the blog, and
3.) please don't reference murder or put any gruesome pictures in the video.

Think of it as something that can be posted on blogs and forums to let people know this place exists so people who have an interest in Manson can come and find his music. I can't offer any sort of prize or anything but I'll post all your videos here so everyone can see them and then I'll pick the one(s) I like the best and use them to promote the site. Sound good? Ok then, let's see what ya got! You can submit them to me by sending me by uploading them to Youtube or any other such site (Daily Motion, Guba, Veoh, etc.) and send me the link at nitegaunt@gmail.com or you can send them to me at my profile on YouTube.

A Quick Note About Comments, Etc.

I appreciate all who visit and and leave comments but I must ask a favor from you all. No matter which post you are commenting on, could you please leave your comments under the most recent post. It just makes it much easier for me to find them and to get back to you if you have a question. I don't get any email alerts telling me when someone leaves a comment and, as it stands, I have to dig through each individual posts' comments to find which ones are new. Therefore, I sometimes don't even see them until they've been there for a week or two. So, if you can just leave them under the most recent post then I can just check there regularly and communicate much easier and quicker.

Also, I just wanted to say I appreciate those who've begun "following" this blog. In case you haven't noticed, I've included a "follow this blog" widget in the sidebar at the right of the page. Well, finally here it is! I've been searching the world over for this one for a couple of years now really. Thanks to Gobacktogo for uploading it for me and for our new banner here. Your help is much appreciated in keeping this blog alive. This is, I believe, the most recent "album" by Charles Manson. It's actually phone conversations so it's more of a spoken word kind of thing. I don't know if we'll see another musical release anytime soon since I believe he is still without access to a guitar. Anyway, here is a quote from the liner notes from the release to give a little more insight into what this record is all about. Enjoy!

Finally, a completely new record to post here! This vinyl rip of "Son of Man" was given to me by gobacktogo, a visitor to the blog. Side A of the record is music recorded in prison while the B side looks to be simply some artwork cut into the vinyl. Very interesting find! I'd not heard these recordings before so, suffice to say, they gotta be pretty rare, ha! Charlie seems to be in a pretty mellow mood here and drifts from groove to groove as he is want to do. The roughly twenty minute recording has a very dreamy atmosphere similar to some of the more chilled moments on "Way of the Wolf". Here is the link that gobacktogo generously sent me and another to the art for the album, which is not included in the zip file.

Geraldo Interview

I believe I've posted the audio version of this interview here already. If so, it should be in the archives. Still, I don't think it was unedited so here you go. This is part one of the famous Geraldo interview. It's in seven parts so you can either watch them here if they pop up at the end or go to Youtube and finish watching it there. Here's a link to the profile of the person who uploaded it so you can find it in their videos. Fully unedited, this is a actually a really good interview in spite of Geraldo's combative attitude. He spends a good deal of the time trying to goad Manson into saying things that sound crazy or violent. All that aside, though, it's a long interview and Charlie gets to say a lot of things that you may not have heard. He actually tries to be very clear and concise. No music here but I just thought this would be of interest to anyone who has never seen the unedited version.

Beach Boys - 20/20

I've been keeping an eye out for this one for some time now. Although I'm not much of a Beach Boys fan, "20/20" is the album that includes their cover of Manson's "Cease To Exist". The song is altered quite a bit, though, with changes to the lyrics and arrangement. Still, it's certainly interesting in a historical sense and provides a new perspective on the scene of the time for anyone who hasn't heard it (which is pretty likely since this isn't one of their most popular records). Actually, the rest of the record isn't bad, either. Anyway, for what it's worth, here you go.

Someone asked in a comment about a new release of "Lie" with an extra bonus disc. Actually, it's called "Charles Manson Sings" on ESP Records. A fairly new release, it's probably still available. This is what Wikipedia had to say about it:

"Digitally remastered combination of Lie and 12 of the 13 tracks on All the Way Alive."

Charles Manson Superstar

A friend found this link on Google video and sent it to me. "Charles Manson Superstar" is a documentary/interview film made by Nikolas Schreck, husband of Zeena LaVey and (at least one-time) member of the Church of Satan. As you can imagine this film has a quite different editorial point of view on Manson and his life. Schreck's stated purpose is an attempt to dispel many of the rumors surrounding Charles Manson and "the Family". I owned a copy of this on VHS for years and I'm glad to get it back. In spite of the sometimes cheesy and all too serious voice over narration, this is probably the best film on Manson I've ever seen. The interview is about as uncensored as you're likely to ever get and Schreck is quite thorough in presenting the story and showing Manson as a multi-dimensional personality rather than the bogeyman he is usually portrayed as in more mainstream interviews and films. He really just lets him talk and the majority of the editing choices seem to be made for continuity rather than to manipulate his words. So, if you've never seen this film I highly recommend it.

"One Mind" Released Under Creative Commons

Apparently the album "One Mind" has now been released under a Creative Commons license. This is the same album that I took down from here about a year ago due to a complaint from Manson Direct who claimed ownership of the album and told me that it was the only one of his records which was "official". I don't really know what to make of this just yet. Here is the article I found and I've embedded a player with the entire album that I also discovered today. I'd call this one of the better of Manson's prison recordings and a damn fine album but go ahead and give it a listen if you haven't already and judge for yourself.

Mutual friends of Charlie have recently given me some info on his condition. Here's what they had to say:

"Mr. Manson was recently released from the prison ACH (Accute Care Hospital) and is back in the SHU (Segregated Housing Unit). We do not have the exact date, however this was confirmed by the CDC.
Although he has recovered from his respiratory problems, Mr. Manson was found guilty on April 11th, 2008 of possesing a "weapon" while in PHU. He was sentenced to 16 months in SHU, also known as "the Hole". This news was confirmed by Mr. Manson’s legal advisor appointed to him through the CDC. We do not know at this time if that 16 month sentence is inclusive of the previous (4) months he has already spent there, or if it is an additional 16 months, making it a total of 20. Once we have confirmed this information, we will let you know.
While in the SHU, Charles may not make telephone calls, or have possession of his guitar. He is allowed to send and receive mail, including letters, cards, photographs, artwork, poetry and post cards. At this time, he requests that you do not send stationery or envelopes, although stamps can always be used. He may receive one book or twenty stamps per letter. As always, Mr.
Manson appreciates receiving your mail!"

The good news is that this indicates that Charlie has recently been allowed his guitar and he's had the ability to make and enjoy his music. I hope he can somehow get us some new recording out here before too very long. It's certainly been too long already.

It's one of the nicest music blogs on the net and hosted by a good friend of mine. Tons of music there of just about all kinds with a heavy emphasis on psychedelic and 60's punk. John Moran - The Manson Family - An Opera

A visitor passed this one my way the other day. His blog is called "Twisted Perceptions" and also had some nice stuff by Moondog there for download. This album was written by John Moran, known for his connection with Phillip Glass, and is just what it says it is - a modern opera - including classical instruments, sound effects, guitars, and the vocal talents of Iggy Pop. Very interesting and very good quality production. I would like to have seen the stage performance. Anyway, these are not my links so I can't guarantee their longevity. Check it out, though, as this is another example of how the Manson myth and music continue to influence popular culture. Even though Charlie has fallen out of favor with the media for bigger boogeymen in recent years he was on the front page of CNN today.

Hey everyone, thanks for the comments. A friend sent me this link and I decided to post it. Even though this is primarily a music site this video should be of interest to anyone here. It's the complete Robert Hendrickson documentary from 1973. Sensational and tabloid-like but full of great footage anyway. You get to see some shots of the folks at the ranch including interviews with Red and Blue. Parole and Updates

Needless to say, Charles Manson was denied parole for the 11th time on May 23. He declined to show up for the hearing reportedly saying that he didn't want parole unless Red was also paroled. I thought it was kind of odd that there was barely a mention of his hearing in the mainstream media. I really had to dig to find anything. Thanks to Manson Family Today for the best info on this. I guess one of the visitor comments here was pretty accurate when it said there are bigger bogeymen out there now. Manson has stated before that the world seems to need someone to put all of their fear in and I guess that someone is less and less him and more people like Bin Laden, nowadays. Which is a good thing, I guess. Still, there's way too much misinformation accepted as fact when it comes to Manson.

On another note, I'd like to thank all the new visitors and people who've left comments in the past couple of weeks. The links for album downloads should mostly still be active. Go through the archives on the right of the page to find what you need. I checked "Psychedelic Soul" yesterday and it was still active. It's about the oldest upload on here so I assume most of the others are still downloadable. As always, any comments are appreciated.

BTW I still need "Taste Of Freedom" if anyone has it.

Ok, so here it is. Fully tagged with cover art and liner notes, the "best of" album of Charles Manson's music I've put together just for you. This album includes 15 tracks and spans about thirty years. I've included what I believe should be a good introduction to the music and thought of Charles Manson. The early session, prison tapes, spoken word, and even The Family after the trial are all here. I devoted the whole night to getting this right so let me know what you think. Even if you are a regular visitor and you have most of these albums I ask that you give this one a try. It's kind of cool to hear these songs side by side. Gives one a different perspective on them. I've yet to hear these anthologies but I'll give a little review of them after I download them, myself. The Tom Snyder interview is very good. Charlie seems to be trying harder to communicate than most times I've heard him interviewed by someone like that. Even though
Snyder is a really crappy interviewer. I've heard the Geraldo but it's been a while. If memory
serves me he's also very aggressive and disrespectful. Of course, that's expected from Geraldo.
I'm still looking for "Taste of Freedom" and "Fear Power God" if anyone has a copy.

Manson Soundtrack (re up)

This was given to me by a visitor here and here's the description that came with it. The documentary this music is from is pretty cool, though. Full of very good footage of Red, Blue, and others at the ranch. Unfortunately, though, it's also full of Bugliosi and his bullshit.

"This is the "soundtrack" from MANSON, the 1973 Oscar nominated documentary directed by Robert Hendrickson and Laurence Merrick. Soundtrack music for the movie was created by Brooks Poston and Paul Watkins, two former Manson associates.

I don't know if there was an official soundtrack release, so I've extracted most of the songs from the film and converted them to mp3. So, there is a little dialogue in some of the tracks. And there are two songs that were from the "Manson Family Jams" album, so I included those two from the original album, not the film, so you dont' have to hear the dialogue on those two tunes.

While I got the names of the songs from the closing credits of the film and on a website. However, there is one song, "Up Beat" by Brooks Poston that I coudn't identify in the film. It might be the closing song of the film - but that song is just a shorter version of "Moments", so I just called it "Moments-2". There are a few instrumentals in the film, but they were either too short or had too much dialogue, so I didn't include these."

This is, as far as I know, the most recent album by Charles Manson. It was released in 2005 in a limited edition with some nice packaging including cover art by Manson and excerpts from letters in the liner notes. Very worth having an original and you may be able to still get one from www.familyjams.com. Incidentally, they also have re-released "All The Way Alive", which I believe was a remastered and abbreviated version of "Psychedelic Soul...". I tried to order one from People's Temple Records a while back but my money order was returned and I was told that the man who ran the label had passed away and their were legal matters preventing them from selling his records. "One Mind" is pure gold. Seventy-five minutes plus of Manson's latest songs, poetry, and spoken word improvisation. This link was passed on to me from someone who visited this blog and saw my wish list. It's very much appreciated. . . and now I pass it on to you.

This album is one oldest and probably most accessible of Charles Manson albums next to "Lie". Manson seemed to be in pretty good spirits through most of this recording, playing happy jazzy chords and doin' a lot of Scatman type bebop vocals. Includes the track "My Feeling Begins To Growing" which was used as the title cut on the documentary film, "Charles Manson Superstar" (which I highly recommend btw). Family Jams

This is the double album, The Family Jams, recorded in 1970 or so by the members of the family who weren't in jail at the time. The first part of this album was also released as "The Family Sings The Songs Of Charles Manson" and also as the second part of "The White Album" ("Lie" being the first part).
A great and rare find for collectors and completists, this version is a different mix than "The Family Sings..." but it's not as good as far as sound quality goes. The first disc, if memory serves me well, is a little diffferent than the other versions, but it's the second disc that makes this set such a great find. Disc two is full of alternate versions and outtakes from the sessions plus some remakes of songs originally appearing on the "Lie" album. Thanks to my friend James "Eutha" Woody for turning me on to this one.

The Way Of The Wolf (re up)

In my personal opinion, this is probably the best of the prison recordings that I've heard. "The Way Of The Wolf" is thirteen tracks and clocks in at about an hour long. "Oklahoma Angel Love" is a sort of tribute to influences like Lefty Frizzell and Woody Guthrie while "Red Snake" is full of rememberances of the day at Spahn Ranch. "ATWA" delivers the message of ecological revolution while the next track, "Universal Law", runs the gambit of emotions and introduces us to characters like "Straight Razor Sammy and Ice Pick Mike". There's an Indian war chant (with participation from other inmates and makeshift drums) and even a couple of funny tracks at the end where Charlie tells a story about a dog to another inmate and has some fun with a guard. Good sound quality, too, and a rare find. I scored this one off of Ebay a few years back.

One of the best of the prison recordings of Charles Manson. This one was put out in 1994 in honor of Manson's 60th birthday and includes some truly beautiful songs like "Peace In Your Heart" and "Hank Williams". Recorded at Vacaville in the early 80's, it features some really neat improvs and a spoken word introduction. I often have wondered if Roky Erickson was familiar with Charlie's music, the way he strings together so many words in a phrase and still makes them fit in the songs, I can't help but think he was an influence.

White Album (Lie plus The Family Sings)

Here we have what is sometimes termed "The White Album". It's really two albums, "Lie" and "The Family Sings the Songs of Charles Manson". "Lie" is definately the most famous of Manson's releases. It was originally released during the trial to drum up support and raise a little money for the family. A decently recorded album, it features Charlie on lead vocals and guitar with cameos by many of the family. Every song is a classic and this one is the best starting point for anyone interested in the music of Manson and Family but who doesn't know what to download first.

"The Family Sings..." was originally released in 1970, I believe. It features many members of the family including Steve Grogan on lead vocals with backup vocals by Red, Blue, Ouish, Gypsy, Brenda, and more. A really cool album, indeed. Professionally recorded and loaded with good songs. It actually kind of has a gospel feel to it with the choir of girls and children and the trade off vocals.

Both these albums comprise this download and both are well worth it. Especially for free. Enjoy and spread the Love.

Psychedelic Soul of Charles Manson

I guess I'll kick off this blog by posting one of the most obscure of all Manson recordings, "The Psychedelic Soul of Charles Manson". These are the original demos that Charles Manson did with Terry Melcher and Dennis Wilson (Beach Boys) that started it all. These tracks predate the infamous "Lie" album and feature a very shy Manson running through some classics like "Sick City", as well as some otherwise unheard pieces. The real gems, though, are the covers. There's an old cowboy style song (with a twist of course) and a version of Willie Nelson's "Night Life".

The recording quality isn't the greatest but this album is a priceless peek into Charlie's mindset in the late 60's. The tape rolls as Manson jams and shoots the shit with the people in the room through two full cd's worth of material. You'll hear stories, jokes, rants, and spirtual philosophy. Just Charlie, a guitar, and those present in the studio (including a couple of the girls but I don't know which ones). A must have for any fan or collector.

I've been fascinated by the man and the myth for a long time now and I know how hard it is to find these things. Many of these records are very pricey when you can find them and, as much as I'd like to have all the "originals", I don't think it's right to profit from him or the legend that surrounds him. I do think, though, that a lot of myths can be dispelled and a lot can be learned from listening to his recordings and these are some of the reasons why I am putting these out for free here. Enjoy!
